Galvanized Steel Wire: Coating, Strength and Uses in Construction

The wire starts as high quality carbon structural steel such as 45#, 65# and 70#. It is drawn to size and then coated with zinc by hot dip galvanizing or electro galvanizing. The zinc layer is the part that protects the steel from moisture and air, and for demanding work the coating is controlled at 200 to 300 grams per square metre. The result is a carbon steel wire with a surface that resists rust while keeping the mechanical properties of the drawn wire.
Because the zinc coating protects the surface, galvanized steel wire is used where the wire will be exposed for a long time. It can serve as unbonded prestressed reinforcement in concrete, and it is commonly used for parallel steel wire cables in cable stayed bridges. In bridge work the wire may also sit inside a flexible cable sleeve that acts as outer protection. Other uses include fencing, strapping, springs and general construction where a rust resistant wire is needed.
Buyers usually ask about three things: wire diameter, tensile strength and zinc coating weight. We confirm these before production, because the drawing and coating steps are set to match the final use. If the wire is going into prestressed concrete, the coating weight matters as much as the strength; if it is going into a fence or a general purpose part, the diameter and surface finish are the main points.
